Greenest shipping company of Limburg
Stage V motor technology
In 2023, both ships were equipped with ultra-efficient Stage V engines, which can achieve fuel savings of approximately 30%. Stage V represents the strictest emission standards for particulate matter (soot particles) and nitrogen. The new Volvo Penta propulsion engines are equipped with an after-treatment system; this injects AdBlue into the exhaust gases to 'neutralize' particulate matter and nitrogen. As a result, the emission of soot particles and nitrogen is reduced to a minimum. The 'auxiliary engines' on board for the bow thruster installation (Iveco) and the electricity supply (JCB) are also Stage V certified. The new engines are also suitable for HVO 100, a clean alternative to diesel consisting entirely of vegetable oils, waste, residual oils, and fats. This can achieve a CO2 reduction of as much as 90%.
Green Deal for Inland Shipping
With these innovations, we fully comply with the climate objectives set for inland shipping within the Green Deal. Moreover, we aim to eventually switch completely to HVO 100 fuel; due to scarcity, this fuel is currently too expensive. As an alternative, we are now refueling with the alternative fuel GTL (Gas To Liquid). This fuel is made from natural gas and is therefore not fossil-free; however, the CO2 emissions are compensated by paying an extra amount, with which the producer invests in sustainable projects such as hydroelectric power plants. In this way, the combustion engines are still CO2-neutral.
More Comfort Onboard
These adjustments also greatly improve the comfort onboard. You no longer smell foul exhaust fumes, and the engine noise is significantly reduced because the engines are flexibly mounted.
Currently, there is no shipping company in Limburg whose entire fleet complies with the Stage V standard, which allows us to confidently claim that Cascade Shipping is the greenest shipping company in Limburg.
